Yellow precipitate from mixing copper(II) chloride and NaOH?
I'm doing an electrolysis of NaCl solution with copper electrodes and a salt bridge. (Just a tube from one half cell to the other.) My understanding is that the anode half cell will develop a CuCl2 solution, the cathode half cell will develop an NaOH solution.
Well, I accidentally mixed the solutions, and got this funny yellow precipitate. What happened?
this yellow precipitate is due to copper reacting with the oxygen forming copper oxide. copper takes oxygen from NaOH and the Na binds to the Cl
