NRI Broadcaster and Author Honoured in London
The concerns and issues affecting Indians settled all over the world are basically the same: integration, immigration, racial profiling, job discrimination, family values and preserving traditions. For discussing and highlighting these social and political issues on air about the Indians living in the United Kingdom and Europe, Sathi Ludhianvi, a multilingual discussion host on Kismat Radio, London, has been recently awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Arts Award by the University of East London.
Sathi Ludhianvi, a well known Punjabi author and journalist, was the first Punjabi journalist to work as a Punjabi news editor on Sunrise Radio, London, in the Nineties. He later became popular on television. His current affairs programme on Kismat Radio, a sister radio station of Sunrise Radio Network, five days a week is well received in UK and Europe.
”Sathi Ludhianvi has worked tirelessly to tackle issues of Social Justice and inequality.” said The Acting Vice Chancellor of The University of East London Prof Susan Price at the ceremony.
The Dean of the University of East London Dr Mohammad Dastbaz said,” Sathi’s radio programmes have always dealt with ground-breaking cultural issues in current affairs, covering contemporary political issues in the UK and South Asia, such as, race relations, women’s rights, social cohesion, immigration, even Bhangra music and its cultural influences.”
A graduate from the University of Punjab, Sathi Ludhianvi arrived in the UK in 1962 from Ludhiana, india. He worked for the Post Office and British Airways as sub postmaster and Capacity Control Officer respectively before becoming successful businessman in pharmacy, sports goods and stationery trade.
He became the very first Punjabi and multilingual broadcaster, writer and journalist to receive the Honorary Doctorate of Arts from University of East London. He has received many other awards including Sahit Sharomani Award from the Government of Punjab in 1985 and later on Culture and Media award from India International Foundation and House of Commons All Parliamentary, Punjabis in Britain. He also won Life Time Achievement Award from Punjabi Academy in Leicester, Britain.
In his speech, after receiving his Doctorate, Dr Sathi Ludhianvi said,” I feel extremely honoured, privileged and humbled but with this award I feel more responsible to make this world better in my own small way. It is a long way from me arriving at Heathrow Airport 47 years ago as a young man, with a dream to make my and family’s life better. My objective was also to do something for my community and work for the country I was about to make my home.“
He recounted, "After I joined Sunrise Radio Network in the early nineties, I brought up issues which I felt were relevant to the British-Asian community, via television. People coming from abroad can be resented or considered a threat, particularly in those early days. My stand was to tell the people of Asian origin to fight the menace of racism, and at the same time to be faithful to the adopted country. The newcomers also needed to be shown in a positive light. It is evident that the immigrants are genuinely making a vast and priceless contribution to the welfare of Britain.
He said that his objective is that our country Great Britain should become even greater. "For that purpose, we all must live in harmony and create an atmosphere of cohesion, understanding and peaceful coexistence," he said and has contributed his share in good measure.
