This means that the units can be made is such a way that the signal is the central focus of the device, and high quality components can be used to generate a super high quality signal. UHF radios can reach locations and dead spots that cell phones could never reach, particularly when you are using it out in the open. A walkie-talkie enables you to communicate to anyone all at the same time. Also important is that a cell phone has a much worse warranty that UHF radios (years instead of several months.) Many of these radios will come with the ability to interconnect with phone lines, have caller identification, just like your favorite cellular does. UHF radios don't make you pay a regular fee every month, all that is needed is to purchase your radio and acquire your license and no more money is needed to use the device. You will also find that while your cell phone is somewhat unpredictable and not durable, these UHF radios are extremely dependable and rarely breakdown. This is particularly important for emergency situations of during a disaster when you need dependable communications. While UHF radios have distinct advantages over cell phones, they will never completely replace them and each has its own unique use that is advantageous for it.

They will operating using a tower antenna and will be plugged in to your wall at all times. You can also have UHF radios that are vehicle mounded units, and they are specifically designed to operate in cars or trucks. These are extremely popular with police, fire, and other government agencies. Finally you have the hand held units that people commonly refer to as walkie talkies. These units are completely self contained, and are mobile wherever you decide to take them.
If you decided it is time to purchase a few UHF radios, you really need to consider exactly how you will be operating it. Do you just need it close to home, around the neighborhood, or at the shopping plaza? Are you going to use it on a daily basis, at work, or just on vacations and trips away from home? What type of terrain do you have around you, are you near large mountain ranges or widen opens spaces like the plain? And finally, will you be using your radio with operators that are close by or far away? These are all considerations you need to nail down early before your purchase.
In terms of cost with UHF radios, you generally get what you pay for, as with most things in life. The one half watt unit are the least expensive models and have the shortest operational range. These are usually just personal family type hand half walkie talkies are good for this purpose. With base stations UHF radios you are starting to get into professional grade electronics, and expect to pay much more money. These units are for people who are serious about their radios, so know what you are getting into.
Here are a few tips for you when owning your UHF radios. Keep your radio as dry as possible, and away from any potential moisture. Even though these units are solid state they are sensitive when contacted with water. Turn your unit off when you are not using it, this alone will help extend the life of your radio. Clean it frequently using a soft cloth and canned air to get the dust out. And finally, keep it in storage away from direct contact with sunlight.
