How much does it take to make a wine bottle?
how much does it take to make the actual wine bottle including the cork, the labels, everything?!
There are may components that go into a bottle of wine. The cost is a lot more than the cost of the physical cork, bottle and label.
First off there's the growing of the grapes. The costs involved there is vineyard workers, farm equipment, land maintenance, property taxes, planting costs, constant vine maintenance (including pruning of plants, tilling of soil, harvesting, training the vines onto the wire system, etc.) any kind of pesticide or fertilizing costs, maintenance of trellis system.
Then there's the harvesting of grapes, smaller wineries will have to hire a crew and machine harvester to come through and harvest the grapes. If the grapes are hand harvested as some varieties need to be, there is the labor costs there. Then there is the crew in the winery sorting and processing the grapes.
There is a lot of wine making equipment needed. This machinery is usually European made and very costly. Then there's the barrels or steel tanks that the wine is aged and fermented in. The steel tanks can obviously reused. The barrels cost anywhere between $500-1000 a piece. Each barrel holds about 300 bottles of wine and the barrels can be reused about 5 times before they are neutralized and there won't be any oaky taste left. Then think about the storage cost, all these barrels need space to be stored which adds to property costs.
Once the wine is finished it needs to be bottled. So the cost of bottles, corks and labels come in. There is labor costs that it takes people to bottle the wine. The bottle machine is a very expensive piece of equipment-some small wineries don't even have a bottling system and will bring their wine to other facilities to be bottled. The bottling line needs to be maintained an calibrated for each bottling run.
All of this is overseen the wine maker and their assistants.
Then the wine is stored in a warehouse or shipped out to distributors. Then there's advertising, promotion, administrative costs, etc.
So short story, the cost of a bottle is much more than bottle, cork and labels. There's no simple answer for what the cost is since each winery is different and will operate on a different scale.
